Rock from the Beginning
(Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom: The Golden Age of Rock)
Author: Nik Cohn
Publication date: 1969
Revised with new title: 1972
Stein & Day
One of the earliest rock histories. Coverage of the UK scene is greater than that of most early rock histories.
Originally published in 1968 as Rock from the Beginning. Subsequently revised in 1972 and since then published as Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom.
In his preface to the 1996 reissue Cohn writes;
My purpose was quite simple: to catch the feel, the pulse of Rock, as I had found it. Nobody, to my knowledge, had ever written a serious book on the subject before, so I had no precursors to inhibit me. Nor did I have any reference books or research to hand. I simply wrote off the top of my head, whatever and however the spirit moved me. Accuracy did not seem of prime importance (and the book, as a result, is a morass of factual errors). What I was after was guts, and flash, and energy, and speed.
