Freddie's Dead was written for the soundtrack of the film Super Fly. It was first released on a single in July 1972 and then on the Super Fly soundtrack album also in July 1972. The single reached #4 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 in the Billboard R&B chart.

The Super Fly movie was released in August 1972. Only instrumental arrangements of the song are used in the movie. These occur in the opening sequences of the movie and at other places. This use of the song led the full title Freddie's Dead (Theme From Superfly). The song occurs on some recordings as just Freddie's Dead. Freddie is a character in the movie.
