Roger Troy sings some of the lyrics of Heartbreak (It's Hurtin' Me) at the end of the version of Further On Up The Road at the Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders show on December 28, 1972.

The song was first recorded by Jon Thomas in 1960 for a single on a local label. This version was quickly released on a national label. The song was covered by Little Willie John soon after the Jon Thomas version was released. Both the Jon Thomas and Little Willie John versions reached the top ten of the R&B charts.
