In an interview published in Glide Magazine in March 2021 Donna Jean was asked who Kettle Joe was. She replied:

"... it's Garcia. And, it pretty much describes the first two or three times of when I first met him and was getting into the band, and if you listen to it again, with that knowledge, you'll understand.
