This documentary includes excerpts from an interview with Jerry Garcia.

The documentary examines the lives of the 'beat generation' writers and associates, including Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and William S. Burroughs, from 1944 when Ginsberg and Kerouac met through to the deaths of Ginsberg and Burroughs in 1997.

Includes archive interviews with the main figures and retrospective interviews with others including Ken Kesey, Norman Mailer, Philip Glass and Garcia. Also includes dramatised segments with Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Dennis Hopper portraying Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. All interspersed with clips illustrating the time period.

The movie was directed by Chuck Workman.
