Two takes of the song were recorded by the Dixieland Jug Blowers on December 10, 1926. One of these was released on two early singles. One single was credited to the Dixieland Jug Blowers. The other was credited to Johnny Dodds & the Dixieland Jug Blowers though Doods did not play on Boodle Am Shake. Both of the takes are included on the Dixieland Jug Blowers collection Louisville Stomp: Complete Sessions.

The song usually occurs on recordings with writing credited to Jack Palmer and Spencer Williams. Sometimes though W. C. Handy is credited, perhaps because the Handy Brothers Music Company own the copyright.
