The authorship of the song is uncertain. On some recordings it is credited as Traditional. Other sources credit Edd Mayfield and some John Reedy. The song was performed live by Bill Monoe and at least one recording credits him as the songwriter but this is more likely the source of the arrangement rather than the song itself.
