The song was written by Peter Yarrow with lyrics based on an unpublished poem written by Leonard Lipton in 1959. The song was first recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1962 and released on a single and on their Moving album in early 1963. The single reached #2 in the Billboard Hot 100.

The title of the song on the original single and album was just Puff. On some later pressings of the single and on most subsequent recordings, by Peter, Paul and Mary and by others, the title is Puff The Magic Dragon or Puff (The Magic Dragon).
