Walking The Dog was probably played by the Warlocks in 1965. It was played by the Grateful Dead in 1966 and then again, infrequently in 1970, 1984 and 1985. The song was also played by Ratdog and Phil Lesh & Friends.

Walking The Dog was first released on a Rufus Thomas single in 1963. This was the second in a series of 'Dog' releases by Thomas - it was preceded by 'The Dog', and followed by 'Can Your Monkey Do The Dog?' and 'Somebody Stole My Dog'.

The song has been recorded by many other musicians. On some recordings the title is given as Walkin' The Dog. On some recordings writing credits for this Walking The Dog have been confused with credits for I'm Walkin' The Dog by Cliff and Tex Grimsley which was popularised by Webb Pierce.
