I'm A Man

I'm A Man was performed by the Grateful Dead with Bo Diddley on March 25, 1972.

The song was originally recorded by Bo Diddley on 2nd March 1955, his first recording session. It was initially released in 1955 as the B-side of Bo Diddley. Writing credits on records are Bo Diddley or Ellas McDaniel, the real name of Bo Diddley. The latter name often appears incorrectly Ellis McDaniels or other variation.

It is sometimes stated that I'm A Man is a Muddy Waters song. This is not the case. The original release of I'm A Man was a chart success. Chess Records wanted to cash in on this success by releasing a similar record. This was accomplished by Muddy Waters recording more or less an identical song and releasing it with the title Mannish Boy. This release was also a chart success. Mannish Boy usually occurs with writing credits shared by Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley.
