Joe Gallant formed Illuminati as a trio in the early 1980's. The group expanded through that decade eventually becoming an 18 piece ensemble. The inclusion of a cover of the Phil Lesh song Unbroken Chain on their 1994 album Code Of The West led to a commission from the Grateful Dead organisation to produce an arrangement of the Blues For Allah album. This led to the Blues For Allah Project album release which was followed by two live album of Grateful Dead material and a reworking of the Terrapin Station Suite.
