Spanish Jam |
Composer: Grateful Dead

Spanish Jam was supposedly developed by the Grateful Dead from a theme in the piece Solea on the Miles Davis album Sketches Of Spain. The jam was introduced in Grateful Dead reheasals in 1967 and became part of the concert repertoire in early 1968. It was played by the Grateful Dead mainly in 1968, 1973, 1974, 1981 to 1987 and 1992 to 1995 with just a few solitary outings in other years. In total is was played around 50 times. The Grateful Dead apparently never gave the jam a name. The Spanish Jam name slowly became the standard name on tapes and setlists. When the jam was first released on an archive live album, Dick's Picks, Vol. 6, it was called Spinach Jam. Subsequent releases though all used the Spanish Jam title. Versions of Spanish Jam have also been performed by Furthur, Ratdog and Phil Lesh & Friends. |
