Performed by Pigpen and Peter Albin at the Tangent in Palo Alto on an unspecified date in 1964.
One of the most widely performed American folk songs. The Smithsonian folklife archive has nearly 200 recordings of the song. It occurs in many different forms and under a number of different titles. Spike Driver Blues is a member of the John Henry family of songs. The subject of the song revolves around the digging of the Big Bend Tunnel in West Virginia. John Henry is thought to be a legendary rather than real person.
