Dark Hollow
Composer: Traditional / Bill Browning

Dark Hollow was performed about 30 times by the Grateful Dead. It was played in acoustic sets in 1970 and 1980 and in a couple of electric sets in 1971. The song was also performed by Old & In The Way in 1973.

The song is usually credited to Bill Browning on recordings. Some recording credits suggest the song is traditional. Browning recorded the song in early 1958 and subsequent recordings using the Dark Hollow title follow his arrangement of what is at least partly traditional material.

The first verse of Dark Hollow also occurs in the family of traditional songs which usually occur as East Virginia Blues / East Virginia or Little Birdie. The songs with titles Dark Holler Blues, Dark Holler or Some Dark Holler are usually more similar to East Virginia Blues than to Dark Hollow.
