Tangled Up in Blue was performed twice by the Grateful Dead with Bob Dylan during the Dylan & The Dead tour in July 1987. These were the only Grateful Dead performances of the song.

Tangled Up In Blue was a regular feature in the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire between the end of 1976 and 1995. In total the group played the song over 250 times. The Jerry Garcia Band recorded the song during the Run For The Roses sessions but the song was not included on the issued LP. A studio version was subsequently released on the Jerry Garcia box set All Good Things.

The song was performed by Bob Dylan with The Dead on August 8, 2003 but was not included on the concert CD of that show. It was also performed by Phil Lesh with the SFSC All-Stars during a set of Dylan songs on March 20, 2009 and by Phil Lesh & Friends quite a few times between 2016 and 2019. Billy & The Kids played the song in 2023.

Tangled Up In Blue was first recorded by Bob Dylan on September 16, 1974, this recording was included on the Bootleg Series. It was recorded again on December 30, 1974 for Blood On The Tracks.

Dylan said on one occasion that this was a song that took ten years to live and two years to write.
