Knockin' on Heaven's Door

Knockin' on Heaven's Door was performed four times by the Grateful Dead during the Dylan & The Dead tour in July 1987. One of these performances was with Bob Dylan the other three were just the Grateful Dead. The song was then performed about 70 times by the Grateful Dead between August 1987 and July 1994. On all but a couple of these performances the song was the closing song of shows.

The song was performed over 170 times by the Jerry Garcia Band between 1976 and 1994.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door was written by Dylan in Durango in January 1973. It was first recorded by Dylan in February 1973. The original intention was to have an instrumental version only in Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid but a vocal version was also included. The Directors cut of the film released in 1988 has only the instrumental version.
